ALGERIAN CHAOUIS BRACELET
This unique and antique bracelet was made before 1945 and has four official French ‘Tete de Maure’ silver hallmarks on it. Dating it before 1945 and determining the silver alloy to at least 800 Sterling silver. It was made by the Chaouis Berbers in the Aurès mountain range in Algeria. It shows the star and crescent of Algeria, and some additional motifs that we also find on bracelets of the Ouled Naïl people in central Algeria (the snake or wave motif notably) and the open ‘ajour’ work that we see in Algeria and Tunisia.
There are many examples of the work of the master silversmiths of Chaouis Berbers made in commission for different tribes in Algeria and even adjoining nations.
It has the original double safety closure. The locking pin with safety chain is locked firmly in place with a silver clasp on the bottom of the bracelet. All and all in excellent conditions and a rare collector’s item.
